How Did I Get Involved in Impact?
  • When I transferred to UGA, I wanted to do something different with my spring break other than Netflixing and relaxing at home. My first trip occurred during my sophomore year to Indianapolis, IN. My trip focused on community health and wellbeing. I had never been to Indianapolis, IN before, and I figured I would enjoy learning, exploring, and meeting new people over my spring break. At first I was apprehensive, but after meeting my site leaders and my fellow Impact participants, I fell in love with Impact and everything it stands for!
Why am I Interested In Gender Appreciation?
  • When I took the course, sociology of gender, I became interested in gender and how it impacts society. After taking this class, I’ve seen the impact gender has on my life and my decisions, while also becoming aware of the issues and discrimination other genders face. Gender affects the type of healthcare, jobs, products, entertainment, and respect we receive from others. Gender is not only limited to the binaries society imposes, but also sexual orientation and race. I want to learn more about the impact gender has among the LGBTQIA community and minorities in the non-binary and binary community.
Fun Fact!
  • I am a huge foodie, so I will eat any and everything as long as it looks appetizing.

How did I get involved with IMPACT?
  • I first got involved with IMPACT last year, when I was a participant on the HIV/AIDS awareness and advocacy trip to Memphis, TN. I was with a fantastic group of people, and really was able to learn so much from and bond with our community partners in Memphis. From my experiences over that one short week, I was able to see what an intentional organization IMPACT is, and what meaningful, community-based service folks are able to do on their IMPACT trips! I had a few friends that led trips and I spoke with them about being a site leader, and they encouraged me to apply when applications opened.
Why am I Interested In Gender Appreciation?
  • Someone’s gender expression and identity affects all parts of their life, and is intrinsically linked with socialization and culture. Every single person has a different interpretation of gender, and as a trans/nonbinary Puerto Rican, I’ve grown to find joy in my unique perception of gender, but have also experienced prejudice and discrimination in many settings due to my gender expression. Differences in presentation and interpretation of gender across communities should be celebrated, and I am so excited to learn more about how to be a source of strength and protection to folks in other communities, and  grow alongside my co-leader and participants!

Fun fact
  • I’ve been stung by a velvet ant, which (according to the Schmidt Insect Sting Pain Index) is the 3rd most painful insect sting in the world!

Key Terms

Transgender - an umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/or expression is different from cultural expectations based on the sex they were assigned at birth.

Non-binary - an adjective describing a person who does not identify exclusively as a man or a woman. Non-binary people may identify as being both a man and a woman, neither , somewhere in between, and/or another gender entirely. While many also identify as transgender, not all non-binary people do.

Gender expression - the multitude of ways (ex: behaviors, dress) in which a person may choose to communicate their gender to others, which may or may not conform to socially defined behaviors and characteristics typically associated with being either masculine or feminine.

Gender identity - one’s innermost concept of self as male, female, a blend of both,  neither, or other genders entirely. One's gender identity can be the same or different from their sex assigned at birth.

Gender non-conforming - a broad term referring to people who do not behave in a way that conforms to the traditional expectations of their gender, or whose gender expression does not fit neatly into a category. Many gender non-conforming people
also identify as transgender, but not all.

Gender Dysphoria - significant distress caused when a person's assigned birth sex and its socially  associated gender  does not align with the gender that they identify with. Gender dysphoria has a large social component, and includes individuals being perceived as the wrong gender by others.

Misgendering - the experience of being labeled by others as a gender other than one that a person is. This includes transgender / gender non-conforming people being called by the wrong pronouns, wrong names, or by incorrectly gendered language.

Sex assigned at birth - The sex given to a child at birth, most often based on the child's external anatomy. This is also referred to as "assigned sex at birth."

Intersex - An umbrella term used to describe a wide range of natural bodily variations in sexual anatomy,
reproductive organs, hormonal patterns and/or chromosomal patterns that do not fit the typical definitions for AMAB ( assigned male at birth) or AFAB ( assigned female at birth)  bodies.

Cisgender - a term used to describe a person whose gender identity aligns with the gender identity typically associated with the sex assigned to them at birth.
